12 killed as lightning strikes in UP
Twelve persons have died during the past 24 hours due to lightning and thunderstorm while over a dozen persons have been injured in various parts of the Uttar Pradesh.
According to reports reaching here, five persons died in Allahabad, four in Sonebhadra and three in Barabanki district. The injured persons have been admitted to various hospitals.
In Allahabad, in Khania village, a farmer was working in the fields when lightning struck. Apart from the farmer Sudarshan, Reena (15), Shrawan (15), Dharmendra (16) and Dhaneshwar died on the spot while seven others received burn injuries and have been hospitalised.

2nd OTA to open in Gaya today
New Delhi, July 17: Taking a significant step towards meeting the shortage of over 12,000 officers, the Indian Army’s second Officers Training Academy (OTA) will start functioning from Monday at Gaya in Bihar.
The new academy will be in addition to the existing one at Chennai and will also help the Army increase its officer cadre base, army officials said.
The academy will start with training 135 officers and in the next two years, engage the full strength of over 700 Short Service Commission (SSC) officers, they said.
The Army is facing a shortage of 12,349 officers against its sanctioned strength of around 46,500.

India to start construction of 25th N-plant
Rawatbhata (Rajasthan), July 17: India will begin construction of its 25th nuclear power plant with the first pour of concrete for the 700 MW indigenous Pressurised Heavy Water Reactor (PHWR) here on Monday.
The 700 MW PHWR will be the seventh nuclear plant at the Rajasthan Atomic Power Station (RAPS), which already has an installed capacity of 1,180 MW from six units — the largest from a single site.
The Nuclear Power Corporation of India Limited (NPCIL) currently operates 20 nuclear power plants across six sites and has an installed capacity of 4,780 MW. —PTI

Lakhimpur: 2nd post-mortem says minor not raped
Lakhimpur, July 17: The second post-mortem of the body of the minor who committed suicide here earlier this month on Sunday revealed that she was not raped as alleged by her parents, the police said.
The intermediate student committed suicide on July 10 after allegedly being raped by her teacher and five others in Chhitaunia village here.
After allegations of gangrape, the girl’s body was exhumed on the demand of her family members yesterday for the second post-mortem which did not confirm rape. Superintendent of police Amit Chandra told reporters that the second post-mortem did not confirm the rape with the girl though the report disclosed injury marks over her body.
