10 of 11 kidnapped fishermen return
Ten of the 11 fishermen kidnapped by Bangladeshi pirates last month returned here in South 24 Parganas district on Friday night but one was still missing, official sources said.
After they reached here at about 10.30 pm, the 10 were taken to hospital for medical examination.
However, the whereabouts of one fisherman, identified as Panchanan Lal, was not known, the sources said adding even those who returned could not say anything about him.
Personnel of the Border Guards Bangladesh handed over the 10 fishermen to the BSF and Coast Guard at zero point near near Bihari Canal in the morning. The 10, who had earlier been rescued by Bangladesh forest department personnel reached Kakdwip at night, the sources said.
A gang of Bangladeshi pirates had attacked a group of fishermen, who were in three trawlers off Kenduakhali in the Bay of Bengal, killing three and injuring 10 on January 27. The fishermen fought the pirates and managed to capture five of them who were later handed over to the police at Kulpi the next day.
The pirates, however, kidnapped 11 fishermen, and fled after taking them to Bagherkhal in the core area of the Sundarbans in Bangladesh, the sources said. Forest department personnel rescued them from there and handed them over to the Border Guards Bangladesh.
