‘Naxals getting treated in Nagpur’
Central agencies have got inputs that Maoists may have entered the orange city of Nagpur using its city hospitals for treatment of its cadres injured during anti-Naxal operations by security forces. The city and especially its hospitals has come under the scanner after agencies got inputs that Maoists were getting treated there owing to
the city’s proximity to Naxal hotbeds of Chhattisgarh, Orissa, Andhra Pradesh and Jharkhand. Senior Maoist leader Azad, who was killed last month, was reportedly picked up from the Nagpur railway station. The Nagpur police is keeping a close watch on the patients lists’ getting medical treatment in the city’s hospitals, the sources said.
In another disturbing trend, government sources confessed that Maoists are trying to siphon off funds given to village panchayats even as the Centre is increasingly pumping in money in Naxal-affected areas . The sources said that maoists are targeting NREGA funds and are also trying to take credit for the employment generated through the Central scheme.
Ahead of the martyrs’ week or “Shahid Saptah” being observed by the Maoists from July 28 to August 3, Central agencies have asked Naxal-affected states particularly West Bengal to be on alert. According to latest inputs with Central agencies, more than 250 Maoists cadres have been gunned down by security forces during the last one year. The Maoists may try to avenge the killing of Azad and other cadres during the Shahid Saptah. The alert is believed to have been shared with the Railways as well in view of the repeated Maoists attacks targeting the railways.
The Centre’s anti-Naxal strategy is aimed at targeting the top leadership of the Maoists to weaken the Naxal movement, sources said. Top Maoist leader Ganpathy had visited Chattisgarh last month and the police and Central forces are keeping a close tab on his movements, the sources said. Security agencies have credible inputs to show that Maoist leader Kishenji is injured and got treatment in West Bengal. While the killing of Azad is believed to have created a vaccum at the top level, there were reports that differences have cropped up among the cadres as most of the leaders are either from Andhra Pradesh or West Bengal while the bulk are tribals.
