‘Generous package for farmers’
Maharashtra chief minister Prithviraj Chavan said on Tuesday that a generous new compensation package would shortly be announced for the farmers whose lands have been acquired. With the PM according the safety of nuclear plants the highest priority, the NPCIL and Maharashtra government have assured him that all efforts would be made to engage the local population and address their “fears and concerns in a credible manner”.
Explaining details of site selection, Department of Atomic Energy secretary and Atomic Energy Commission of India chairman S. Banerjee said, “The site selection of the JPP was done as far back as 1985-88, after which the Cabinet gave its approval to the project. The 132 acres of land acquired was done so on the basis of detailed geo-technical investigation.”
“A decision on a site is taken jointly with inputs from the commercial organisation setting up the plant. Site selection is a lengthy, technical process in which the different states (governments) give their inputs which is then cleared by the board (DAE),” Dr Banerjee added.
