‘Dead’ couple turn up at police station in UP

Lucknow, May 9: The UP police landed itself in an embarrassing situation on Sunday when a Muzaffarnagar couple, believed to have been killed, turned up at a local police station and said they were very much alive.
The girl’s brother, Anuj Tomar, was arrested on Saturday on a complaint by the boy’s father, and the police said Anuj had even confessed to killing Ajit Saini.

On Saturday, the police said it had found Ajit’s dismembered body, and on Sunday morning additional DGP Brij Lal said the body of the girl, Anshu Tomar, had also been recovered from the Budhana area. On Sunday evening, Ajit and Anshu arrived at the Nai Mandi police station in Muzaffarnagar and announced they were alive.
The couple said that after eloping from their homes, they first went to Delhi and then to Hardwar.
It was here that they read reports of their death, after which they decided to return home and inform the police.
Ajit and Anshu were in love and had been friends for three years. The girl’s family refused to accept Ajit because he was of a lower caste.
The police is now investigating the identity of the mutilated body which was found on Saturday, and also why Anuj Tomar claimed he had killed Ajit Saini.
