‘Cong took Ulfa help in polls’
The BJP national executive, in a resolution on the situation in Assam and other north-eastern states, has accused the ruling Congress of taking the “overt and covert” support of the outlawed United Liberation Front of Asom to better its electoral prospect in the elections.
The BJP national executive meeting, which started here on Saturday, also charged the ruling Congress government with rampant corruption, besides encouraging infiltration from Bangladesh because of its vote-bank politics.
The resolution of the BJP national executive, which slammed the Congress for initiating peace talks with a section of Ulfa leaders just before the elections, said, “It is indeed curious that when the election to the Assam Assembly is so close, we are hearing again the reported effort of talk between a section of Ulfa leaders and the government.”
The BJP further alleged, “It is too well known in public domain that the Congress in Assam has taken overt and covert support of the Ulfa to better its electoral prospects in the past.”
“The NC Hills scam in Assam, manipulation of transport subsidy and the irrigation scam has ruined Assam.”
The National Investigation Agency unearthed a scam of around `1,000 crores in the North Cachar Hills Autonomous District Council. Launching a frontal attack on the Congress government, the BJP resolution said, “Many ministers and several bureaucrats have been identified by NIA as the beneficiaries of the scam. A huge amount of `13.45 crores in cash was recovered by the CBI from the house of scamsters.”
The executive also regretted, “Around one crore people in Assam have been declared as below poverty line (BPL). It is alleged that nearly 50 per cent of rice meant for these BPL families amounting to `1,000 crores goes straight to the black market. There is serious leakage, corruption and manipulation in the public distribution system in Assam.”
