‘Book a meal’ service on trains
Tired of having the same old meal while on a train journey? Well, the railways now has introduced, on an experimental basis, a “Book a Meal” service on board two of its trains, the Goa Express and the Karnataka Express.
The service has been introduced as a pilot project by the IRCTC (Indian Railway Catering and Tourism Corporation) which manages the catering services of the Indian railways. It means providing 10 lakh meals on board 255 trains across the country either by IRCTC itself or by its contractors.
The “Book a Meal” scheme will not only enable passengers to book their meals online, be it for breakfast, lunch or dinner, but also choose from a wide variety of food on offer. Apart from the usual fare of bread, butter, cutlets and omelettes, passengers on board the Goa Express can order online in advance a vegetarian or non-vegetarian standard meal.
Vegetable sandwiches, two kinds of soup, pepper rasam, egg biryani and veg biryani are other items that passengers travelling on board the Goa Express can order in advance online.
As for the Karnataka Express, on offer to passengers who want to book a meal in advance will be items such as masal dosa, egg curry with rice, fried rice, upma, vada and even curd rice.
This facility of booking online is being offered only to passengers with confirmed e-ticekts. Those availing of the meal booking facility online won’t have to make the payment online. Instead, the pantry car staff on board the train will accept payment in cash once the order has been delivered to the passenger.
Also, once a meal has been booked, no changes in the order or its cancellation will be possible.
