Under attack for rising prices, Dr Manmohan Singh said the government was making every possible effort to control “high inflation”. “I know that in the last few months high inflation has caused you difficulties. We have endeavoured to minimise the burden of increased prices on the poor.”

‘Big deficit in infrastructure’
New Delhi: Noting that lack of physical infrastructure is affecting the economy, Dr Singh said the government will take steps to improve facilities. “There is a large deficit in our physical infrastructure which affects our economic development adversely. Our roads, ports and airports are not of world standards,” he said.

Guwahati: Hundreds of people in Assam and other states of the Northeast came out to join Independence Day celebrations, defying calls for a boycott by five militant organisations. In New Delhi, the PM urged all groups in the region to come forward for talks.
