‘175 graft complaints against MCI chief’
The Central Bureau of Investigation has reportedly received total 175 complaints from different medical colleges in the country, from which former chairman of the Medical Council of India (MCI) Ketan Desai and his team members allegedly demanded bribe for granting permission to continue the courses.
Talking to this newspaper a high ranking official of the agency said, “The CBI has so far received total 175 complaints from different medical colleges in the country. The complainants have alleged that MCI members asked for bribe for granting permission to continue with the existing medical courses.” Agency officials are investigating them, he added.
The CBI recently issued a request on its website asking colleges to inform the agency if they had been asked by MCI chief or his team members for money. The CBI has also questioned certain officials of the MCI in connection with the arrest of council’s president Desai on graft charges and also after receiving complaints from different medical colleges. According to sources only those officials were questioned who had gone on inspection visits of the MCI for giving recognition to medical colleges. Now, investigating officials are also planning to question owners of certain medical colleges again, who recently lodged their complaints against Mr Desai with the CBI, sources added. Besides, some government officials are also under the scanner of the CBI.
It is learnt that Mr Desai has reportedly revealed the names of some government officials, who allegedly connived with him in the racket. Mr Desai was arrested along with three others on April 23 for allegedly receiving Rs 2 crores as bribe from a Punjab-based medical college for giving sanction to enrol students for year 2010-11 though it lacked adequate infrastructure.
