Women voters to change fate of candidates
Tuesday’s bypolls to the Nellore Lok Sabha and 18 Assembly constituencies saw a massive voter turnout, especially women. The bypolls, which saw a few minor clashes, were otherwise peaceful. Voter turnout in the Assembly segments was 76 per cent by the end of pol-ling at 5 pm. However, the figure might touch 80 per cent as a large number of voters who were still standing in queues were allowed to vote. The Nellore Lok Sabha segment registered around 70 per cent polling.
The highest turnout of 88.31 per cent was registe-red at the Rayadurgam Assembly segment while Tirupati was the lowest at 54.7 per cent. In Warangal, minor group clashes, stone-pelting and damage to a police vehicle in the Warangal urban police district were reported. DGP (Law and Order) S.A. Huda said that no major incidents had been reported. In Nellore district, 108 vehicles were seized and 127 persons were taken into preventive custody. Nine election-related cases were booked in Srikakulam, Warangal, Chittoor, East Godavari and Prakasam districts.
