Women students at Eflu complain of eve-teasing
There is lack of security on the campus of the English and Foreign Language University (Eflu), which has exposed women students living in the university’s hostels to unpleasant episodes of eve-teasing from men hanging around the campus. To date, four incidents have been reported where women were followed and lewd comments were passed. The university authorities have failed to take any action, the students complain. Preethi Singh (name changed), a second year student, said, “On Saturday night, a stranger bumped into me near the girls hostel and tried to hold my hand. The moment I reacted, he ran towards the main gate and escaped. A similar incident took place a week ago with one of my juniors.”
Students also complain of being followed and teased on campus by unidentified people. Anjali Mehta (name changed), another second year student, said at night when she visits the canteen, a couple of times she has seen boys sitting on the parapet passing comments and trying to interact with her.
The student union has raised the issue with the management, which has not reacted, says Subhas M, an Eflu student union leader. “All four incidents were put forward and we asked the management beef up security so that students on the campus feel protected. We have also requested proper lighting in the girls hostel, since most of the incidents took place near the women’s accommodation,” he said.
A member from the management department of the university said, “The management will soon be introducing a gate pass system for visitors during day and night, and a proper security check will be imposed at all the gates. Strict action will be taken if we find any visitor misbehaving with students and in turn students should immediately report any such incident.”
