Woman sets her neighbour afire after quarrel
A woman allegedly set her neighbour ablaze after a quarrel on Monday afternoon at Musheerabad.
The accused, Mumtaz, 26, a resident of Siddiqnagar, poured kerosene on Shaheeda Begum and set her afire. The 25-year-old victim, wife of Sheikh Nazeer, received 60 per cent burns and was admitted in Gandhi Hospital, Musheerabad police said. The accused was taken into police custody.
According to Mohammed Riyazuddin, police inspector at Musheerabad, Mumtaz attacked Shaheeda in the kitchen at around 1.30 pm. “Shaheeda said that Mumtaz came into the kitchen with a can of kerosene and poured it on her and lit a match stick,” he said. When the victim screamed for help, her mother-in-law, who lives on the ground floor, rushed to the kitchen and extinguished the fire. Shaheeda was rushed to Gandhi Hospital with the help of locals, the inspector added.
Mr Riyazuddin said Mumtaz was living in a rented house close to Shaheeda’s residence. “The house was owned by uncle of Shaheeda’s husband. As they used to fight over petty issues, the house owner Mohammed Jeelani asked Mumtaz to vacate the house. After that the hatred between the two increased,” he said. “Mumtaz vacated the house three days back, but returned on Monday saying that she had come to look for something that she had forgotten,” he added. However, police found only a kerosene can in the house. Mr Riyazuddin said the police suspects that Mumtaz had planned to kill the victim.
