Woman falls in open pit dug for pipelines, dies
The negligence of the Water Board claimed the life of a 55-year-old woman in Attapur on Friday.
The woman died after falling into an un-barricaded trench dug up for the construction of water pipelines at Attapur main road. The victim, J. Chandramma, a resident of Attapur, died on the spot after she fell into the 10-foot deep trench, the police said.
Rajendranagar sub inspector of police S. Lakshman said that Chandramma stopped to buy betel leaf (paan) at a shop in Attapur main road on her way home on Thursday night.
“Since there was no electricity in the area at that time, she must have fallen into the pit in the dark,” he said.
“Although passersby and locals tried to rescue her, the depth of the ditch hindered the rescue activities. She was dead by the time she was pulled out,” he added. The locals said the trench has been lying open for the last three months.
Meanwhile, Chandra-mma’s son J. Ramulu has lodged a complaint against the contractor in Rajen-dranagar police station.
The victim’s body was sent to Osmania General Hospital for post-mortem.
The police has booked a case under IPC Section 304 A for causing death by negligence, and has started an investigation.
Anjani Kumar, chief general manager (PCC), Hyderabad Metropolitan Water Supply and Sewerage Board, said he had not received any report of the incident and refused to comment further on the matter.
