Water woes worry government
Chief Minister N. Kiran Kumar Reddy on Wednesday expressed concern over the increasing water woes in the state. He was reviewing the preparedness of the administration for the month-long Prajapatham, a government initiative to visit villages during the hot summer season and address people’s problems, in a video conference with the district collectors. Maintaining that there was a severe shortage of drinking water, the Chief Minister asked the officials to identify the problematic villages and take alternative measures for supply of water. The government will release funds for repairs of borewells and replacement of motors if necessary, he added.
The CM said the government had already released Rs 45 crore for improving drinking water facilities and would put in another Rs 55 crore. Referring to the MGNREGS programme, the CM asked the district collectors to enquire about the implementation of the programme, sensitise people, mitigate distress migration during the summer and explain about the expected wage rate hike from the existing Rs 121 per day to the proposed Rs 137 per day to be effective from April, 2012.
The CM also cautioned the officials against the impending electricity crisis. The officials have been taking steps to improve power supply, he said adding that the local MLAs should explain to the people the efforts to maintain the seven-hour supply to the farm sector. Mr Kiran Kumar Reddy said the government had already released Rs 25 crore to solve the problem arising out of electric wires loosely hanging over the residential colonies.
