Water table rises, but faces concrete block
Several days of rain have resulted in an increase in the groundwater levels, according to the groundwater department. The groundwater department has been getting reports of dry and even redundant borewells metamorphosing into active ones in different parts of the state. Even places like Koti and Mehdipatnam in the city have reported improved groundwater levels.
Confirming that many borewells in suburban and several city areas have been recharged, Dr K. Venugopal, joint director in the groundwater department, said the recharging depends on the number of rainy days, intensity and duration of the rains and surface area available for recharge. He, however, said sudden heavy rains are not helpful as it results in run-off, particularly in concretised city areas. So the right quantity, intensity and frequency of rainfall is important. The daily mean rainfall in the state from June 1 to August 1, is 295.3 mm, a little above normal.
