Varsity teachers on indefinite strike
Teachers from Andhra Pradesh Federation of University Teachers’ Association launched an indefinite strike to protest against the state government failing to pay arrears to them for the past five years. Around 400 teachers staged a dharna in front of the Osmania University administrative block on Thursday.
B. Satyanarayana, chairman of Apfuta, said that despite deputy chief minister Damodar Raja Narasim-ha having passed the file for release of about Rs 470 crore arrears to teachers in April 2012, there has been no formal approval from the Chief Minister. “Teachers are entitled to receive arrears from January 1, 2006 to December 31, 2009, as per the government order. The Centre will reimburse the amount up to 80 per cent if the state government pays the arrears. However, the state has failed to do so. Teachers have now decided to paralyse the functioning of universities from August 16 till the issue is resolved,” the chairman said.
“The arrears are a part of our salary. It should be released immediately. In fact, it should be paid to us with interest. Many teachers are facing financial difficulties due to inflation,” Dr Manohar, general secretary of the Apfuta said. The other demands of the association include release of pension arrears to retired teachers, enhancement of age of superannuation to be on par with the universities of neighbouring states and extension of health cards and medical reimbursement scheme on par with state government employees.
