TRS men harden stand on Pranab
Telangana Rashtra Samiti secretary Chilakamarri Narasimha’s appeal to Telangana leaders on Wednesday not to vote for UPA Presidential candidate Pranab Mukherjee has sparked off a controversy within the party. The party has not yet officially decided on whether to support Mr Mukherjee or former Lok Sabha Speaker P.A. Sangma.
In the last Presidential elections, the TRS had abstained from voting. “We have not yet decided on the party's stand; we will decide after the picture becomes clearer in the coming days like whether there would be a contest or not,” former TRS MP B. Vinod Kumar told this correspondent. However, Mr Naras-imha, issued a release on Wednesday stating that Mr Mukherjee had adopted an anti-Telangana stand ever since the issue had come to the central stage in 2009, after the December 9, 2009 statement of Union home minister P. Chidambaram.
“A number of times he had chided Telangana-MPs for raising the demand in the Lok Sabha. Mr Pranab Mukherjee had also said that had he been there in Delhi on December 9, 2009, the statement on Telangana would have been different. How can MLAs and MPs from Telangana vote for such an anti-Telangana man? I appeal to all voters to vote against Pranab Mukherjee,” Mr Narasimha’s statement said.
