TD to back categorisation of SCs
The Telugu Desam has decided to support the issue of categorisation of Scheduled Castes into A,B,C,D groups followed by the vexed Telangana issue. Sources said that TD chief N. Chandrababu Naidu prevailed on party leaders to strive towards achieving more “clarity” on the Telangana issue and instead decided to support categorisation in tune with the BC declaration. Mr Naidu will meet party leaders from Madiga community on August 1 and Mala leaders on August 2 to explain the party’s proposal to back the issue of categorisation and seek their opinion on the same.
He has been having informal meetings with them after he decided to back the SC categorisation in an effort to woo the majority Madigas into the party’s fold on the lines of the BC declaration. The party was in a dilemma as to take up categorisation of SCs into A,B,C,D first or the issue of statehood for Telangana. T-TD leaders have been pressurising Mr Naidu to take up the Telangana issue first due to rumours of an imminent decision by the Centre.
“Mr Naidu prevailed upon party leaders since it has come out with a BC declaration, it will be appropriate to take up SC categorisation. A majority of leaders have agreed to the suggestion,” said a senior TD leader. It is learnt that Mala leaders in the party are opposed to the TD supporting categorisation which is the demand of the Madiga Reservation Porata Samiti while the Mala Mahanadu is also opposed to it.
Mr Naidu has been trying to cajole Mala leaders to accept the party stance since it will benefit the TD in the long run. Senior party leaders from Madiga community, including M. Narasimhulu and Kadiam Srihari, are upbeat as they feel that the support to categorisation of SCs will boost the party’s image amongst these communities, who form a sizeable chunk of the vote bank.
