‘Tax officer tried to kill senior’
The police on Wednesday claimed to have solved the case of attack on a deputy commissioner of commercial taxes with the arrest of four persons. According to the police, a deputy commercial tax officer (DCTO) of the vigilance and enforcement wing allegedly conspired and tried to get his senior officer killed, after the latter sent a report to the higher authorities detailing his suspected irregularities.
Cyberabad police on Wednesday arrested the four and claimed that they were associates of DCTO Syed Basha Hussain. They were charged with criminal conspiracy and attempt to murder, based on a complaint lodged by deputy commissioner of commercial taxes, Thangellapalli Raju. Prime accused Syed Basha was given an anticipatory bail. Complainant T. Raju is a deputy commissioner in commercial taxes department in the Charminar division and the accused, earlier DCTO in Charminar, is with vigilance wing covering the same area.
The cops are also probing whether infighting between officials for dominance over Charminar division led to the attack. Mr Raju, 50, a resident of Nehrunagar in Ramanthapur, said, after joining the department, he put his foot down on Syed Basha’s “illegal activities” and forwarded complaints of subordinates to the higher authorities. “He (Mr Basha) bore a grudge against me (for that),” Mr Raju claimed.
“On March 12, some unidentified persons came to my flat and asked for the address of ‘Bindu Traders’. Though I said I didn’t know, they returned the following day and attacked me with iron rods.”
As he lay injured, a relative took him to a private hospital at Ramanathapur, Mr Raju said. Since he didn’t know the accused, he lodged a complaint expressing doubts over intention of certain officials.
“Post-investigation, the police arrested some of them,” Mr Raju said. “Departmental action would be taken against him (Syed Basha).” Alleging that a “sort of mafia” is at work in the division, he claimed
Mr Basha got a posting again in Charminar “by managing things”.
The arrested persons were identified as B. Philips, 23, of Gurramguda, P. RaviKiran Reddy, 24, of Vanasthalipuram, D. Sai Kumar, 22, of Gowtham Nagar, and Ch. Raju, 25, of Vanasthalipuram. The Uppal police seized a motorcycle, iron rod and Rs 42,000 cash from them.
