Student stabbed, cases booked against OU mob

Several vehicles were damaged on Osmania University campus as groups of students attacked the cops, and one student allegedly received stab wounds as protests over the beef festival on the campus grew violent late on Sunday. A student owing allegiance to ABVP, the students’ front of the BJP, was allegedly stabbed by a group of students at the varsity’s ‘C’ Hostel late on Sunday night. Inspector P. Ashok of Osmania Univer-sity police station said, Rama Rao, a second-year MA student, approached the police at around 1.45 am with several others and reported that he was attacked at the hostel.

According to the complaint, Mr Rama Rao was attacked by about seven fellow students belonging to different political groups, when he went to the toilet at around 1.30 am. While the police sent Mr Rama Rao to Gandhi Hospital, he was later shifted to Whitus Hospital, Habsiguda, on request of the students. A police platoon was, meanwhile, deployed at the hostel after students demanded security following the skirmish.

Mr Ashok Kumar said six cases have been booked at the OU police station in connection with the violence on Sunday night. While three cases were booked against the mob, three other cases were booked against individual groups and students. An attempt to murder case under Section 307 read with 34 of IPC was booked against seven students — Rajesh, Stalin, Aajad, Sudarshan, Vija and M. Bhaskar. Two cases were booked against ABVP activists.

Meanwhile, OU V-C S. Satyanarayana banned the entry of OB vans of media into the campus after students set one on fire on Sunday. He said they can be parked beyond the ‘Y’ junction, the entry towards Tarnaka side, and beyond the NCC gate of the varsity.

Your opinion: Do you feel there is more politics and less cultural difference in the ongoing fests and protests about eating beef?

I want to begin with a little story that was told to me by a leading executive at Aptech. He was exercising in a gym with a lot of younger people.

Shekhar Kapur’s Bandit Queen didn’t make the cut. Neither did Shaji Karun’s Piravi, which bagged 31 international awards.
