State-wide school bandh on July 17
There seems to be no respite from bandhs for schools in the new academic year with various student bodies calling a state-wide bandh of educational institutions on July 17. The student organisations, which had given separate bandh calls in June forcing the closure of schools for four days within a month of the commencement of a new academic year, have now given a joint bandh call to protest the government’s failure in resolving problems being faced by students.
Last week, city schools had held a massive rally to protest the bandhs in which a large number of students and parents had participated demanding the government to bring schools under the Essential Services Maintenance Act. Student organisations owing allegiance to Left parties like SFI, AISF, PDSU and AIDSO have called the bandh on July 17 to protest the government’s failure in supplying textbooks and uniforms and to demand that the government implement G.O. No 91 to curb fleecing by schools in the name of fees.
“Our intention is not to disrupt schools. We were forced to call for a bandh since the government has failed on all fronts in resolving the problems being faced by students and parents. Though it’s nearly a month since the schools reopened, the government has failed to supply textbooks in government schools so far. On the other hand, private institutions were given a free hand to collect fees at their will. We want to bring these issues to the notice of the government through the bandh,” said K. Chandra Mohan, SFI state general secretary.
