State at No. 3 in SC/ST attacks
Concerned over the low conviction rate for cases of atrocities against scheduled castes and scheduled tribes in AP, the Union minister for social justice and employment, Mr Mukul Wasnik, has asked the state government to periodically monitor the cases. He said here on Wednesday that the monitoring could be done under the chairmanship of the Chief Minister at state-level, and of district collectors at the district-level. He also urged the government to set up special courts to deal with these cases.
“Going by the figures, the conviction rate for cases of atrocities against SC/ST is just 13 per cent in AP, which is much less than the national average of 31 per cent,” Mr Wasnik said. The Union minister was here to take part in the 18th meeting of the high-level committee to review implementation of the Protection of Civil Rights and Prevention of Atrocities Acts, in the Jubilee Hall. Chief Minister N. Kiran Kumar Reddy and ministers Sabitha Indra Reddy, J. Geetha Reddy, P. Bal Raju, Pithani Satyanara-yana, deputy speaker M. Bhatti Vikramarka, chief secretary Pankaj Dwivedi, principal secretaries, district collectors, SPs and other senior officials participated in the meeting.
