State to gain from liquor price hike
A proposed increase in price of liquor will further increase revenues. The government is almost certain to increase the basic price following pressure from manufacturers. The high-power committee that held negotiations with the manufacturers on the new price is said to have recommended to the government that the price be increased. The departments concerned are waiting for the final nod from the Chief Minister.
Sources said retailers will get additional revenue of Rs 300 - Rs 350 crore if the government enhances the price by 15 per cent, as their margin will also go up correspondingly. The retailers get a margin of 20 per cent on cheap liquor, and 27 per cent for medium and premium brands. The government will be the biggest beneficiary of higher retail prices, pocketing additional revenue of nearly Rs 1,300 crore.
