State bypolls today, outcome crucial

The much-awaited bypolls to 18 Assembly segments and the Nellore Lok Sabha seat will be held from 8 am on Tuesday amid a charged political atmosphere and heavy security arrangements. The bypolls were necessitated because of the disqualification of legislators for siding with Kadapa MP Y.S. Jagan Mohan Reddy’s political outfit YSR Congress, and the resignations submitted by others in his support. The bypolls will see 46,13,589 voters exercising their franchise. For the first time, the electoral rolls feature the third gender as voters. While there are 22,79,732 male and 23,33,844 female, there are 13 belonging to the “others” category in the electoral rolls.
