Societies, clubs fail to renew tombola licences
Explaining the licence renewal procedure for holding tombola at residential areas, a police official said, “Licencing conditions are governed by Section 3 and 5 of the Andhra Pradesh Lotteries Act. We have found that several clubs haven’t got the licences or haven’t bothered to renew them. Information from the home department recently confirmed that only five clubs have renewed their licenses. Societies do not even bother to apply.”
“We will conduct surprise checks on clubs like we do for card playing. And for societies and colonies, we will conduct raids based on specific information. Also, clubs often take permission for say, 15 to 30 events, but play more than that.” Under the Cyberabad Police Commissionerate limits, several private clubs and societies organise tombola for cash prizes without licenses.
Manager of Secunderabad Club S.R. Naidu said, “We have licence for playing tombola. Every year we renew it from the home department. If there is no license, the police can book cases and take action. If tombola is paid with cash prizes in apartments and colonies, cases can be booked.” On April 9, the Armed Forces Officers Co-operative Housing Society Limited at Sainikpuri was granted licence for tombola for 30 events for a period of one year. Cyberabad commissioner of police Ch D. Tirumala Rao said, “Permission is must under the Act for organising tombola events.”
