Siddu blasts Jaya over Cauvery row
The vexed dispute over water of the Cauvery rocked the Legislative Assembly with leader of the Opposition, Siddaramaiah, training his guns on Tamil Nadu Chief Minister J. Jayalalithaa for raking up the issue at regular intervals. “Ms Jayalalithaa is originally from Karnataka, but after becoming Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu, she is trying to prove that is more loyal to that state. She is guilty of her Karnataka origin. Whenever she is elected to power, she rakes up Cauvery water dispute,” charged Mr Siddaramaiah, adding “the one-point agenda of Tamil Nadu is to harm the interests of Karnataka. It is happening since the British regime, since we came under the then Madras Presidency. The 1920 agreement on sharing Cauvery river water itself is illegal and illogical, as it was the result of a one-sided decision.”
Citing statistics on release of water to Tamil Nadu since 2008, Mr Siddaramaiah said every year Karnataka released more water than awarded by the Cauvery Tribunal. “When such is the situation, where is the scope for approaching the court? On one side, silt in reservoirs is eating up storage capacity. We are forced to construct reservoirs to store water for releasing to Tamil Nadu. The state has to send a strong signal to Tamil Nadu through every means that Karnataka will no longer remain a mute spectator to injustice meted to its farmers,”' he said.
