Sewage water swamps church
The compound of the Holy Trinity Church, Begumpet, is inundated with drainage water since the last four days making it difficult for parishioners to attend chu-rch services. Church members say they have complained to the concerned officials many times but no action has been taken yet.
According to the church’s priest Father Valentine D’Mello, the nala at the ne-arby Prashanthnagar can’t take the load of sewage wa-ter gushing in from Kukat-pally and other areas. The excess drainage water has been accumulating behind the church and is now ent-ering the church premises. On Thursday, it had not only flooded the whole compound but was seeping into the church too.
“The water has polluted our borewells. The dogs gu-arding our premises have fallen ill after drinking the water. Three days ago, sna-kes, breeding in the water, entered the premises. The mosquito menace has also increased,” said Fr D’Mello.
Hosey Tocher, a member of the church council, said that the foul smell emanating from the accumulated water, is putting off parishioners attending religious services. There is danger of the compound wall collapsing and repairs will cost an estimated Rs 26 lakh.
“We are caught between the GHMC and the Water Board. If the matter is not resolved, we’ll have to cancel our major Christmas event, on December 1. All preparations have anyway been stopped,” said council member Marxs Francis.
