Two ministers from Kurnool district, T.G. Venkatesh and Erasu Pratap Reddy on Tuesday demanded that the Congress high command inform them in advance about the possible division of the state. The two ministers reached Delhi and held consultations with AICC general secretary Ghulam Nabi Azad and Union Ministers S. Jaipal Reddy and Vayalar Ravi and briefed them on the party’s debacle in the two Assembly constituencies in the district.

Later, talking to newsmen, they said that with TRS winning in the Parkal and the YSR Congress winning in the Seeman-dhra region, it seems most likely that the Central government would soon divide the state. “There are signs that Telangana state would be granted soon. Our only request to the Centre is not to make hasty announcements as was done in December, 2010. Instead, we are asking for advance information before the bifurcation,” they said.

The ministers said that before bifurcation of the state, the Centre should consult Rayalaseema leaders about the protection of the region, granting of special packages etc. Surprisingly, both said they have no differences with TRS chief K. Chandrasekhar Rao and they are given to understand that the TRS chief was willing to merge his party with the Congress in the event of granting of Telangana state. They added it was time the Centre announced its stand on Telangana as any further delay would further weaken the Congress.

Meanwhile, PCC president Botsa Satyanarayana held consultations with Mr Nabi Azad for over an hour and briefed him about the party’s poor show in the bypolls. Mr Satyanarayana also submitted a report on the results, including how the Congress fared. The PCC chief will be in Delhi for a few more days and is likely to meet AICC leaders, including party president Sonia Gandhi to discuss the bypoll results.

According to sources, Mr Satyanarayana is believed to have said that it was not solely the sympathy wave for YSR Congress chief Y.S. Jagan Mohan Reddy that led to the poor performance of the Congress in the bypolls. The PCC chief reportedly said that other issues like price rise, petrol hike, power tariff hike and non-implementation of some of the government schemes also had its impact on the bypoll results.

I want to begin with a little story that was told to me by a leading executive at Aptech. He was exercising in a gym with a lot of younger people.

Shekhar Kapur’s Bandit Queen didn’t make the cut. Neither did Shaji Karun’s Piravi, which bagged 31 international awards.
