Rubbish chokes Sharadanagar
Residents of Sharadanagar say they are tired of the stink of rubbish that originates from colonies in the vicinity but ends up dumped in their locality.
Reason: there are only two garbage bins for nearly 10,000 families residing in Sharadanagar, Durgabai Deshmukh Colony, Central Excise Colony, Ramakri-shna Nagar, Erukala Basthi and Ganga Bowli in Bagh Amberpet. Both those bins are housed in Sharadana-gar, resulting in sweeping protests from the residents.
Significantly, four bins were recently “made to disappear” from near Hotel Management College in DD Colony, where they had stood for decades. One bin was removed from Rama-krishna Nagar, unidentified persons took away ano-ther from near Swamy Dayanand School in Erukala Basthi, and two ‘vanished’ overnight from near Malla-nna temple in Ganga Bowli.
While GHMC officials cannot shift garbage bins, as finding an alternative site is next to impossible, rubbish from all these colonies is now being dumped in Sharadanagar. Civic officials said though the amount of garbage generated in each locality is going up steadily, residents are not ready to accommodate a bin in their area. Sharadanagar, thus, winds up as the ‘victim.’
Sharadanagar resident K. Padmini recently sent a mail to mayor Mohammed Majid Hussain, stating that waste piled up in the area is leading to health problems.
Sai Kiran, a resident of Gayatri Towers, said, “I work for a software company and return home after midnight. By then, garbage spills on to the carriageway and my cab driver refuses to get inside the lane to my apartment.”
“We can’t play outside because the smell is nauseating. My friends have stopped coming to my house due to this problem,” said D. Gowtham, another resident.
To add to their woes, gar-bage is lifted from Sharada-nagar only once, at midnight, the residents said.
GHMC additional commissioner (health/sanitation) L. Vandan Kumar said bins can’t be relocated un-less local residents find an alternative site, along with a no objection certificate from residents of the area where it is proposed to be put up. “I will look into the issue of bins being remov-ed from colonies,” he said.
