Rakshak kills boy, students protest

They are supposed to be the ‘Rakshaks’ (protectors) of citizens, but a Rakshak vehicle finds itself at the centre of a mishap that led to the death of a student and an angry mob protesting at the Narayanaguda police station, on Tuesday.
A policeman travelling in a Rakshak vehicle opened his door after suddenly stopping in the middle of the road. A bike, which was behind the police vehicle, was hit and the two students on it fell on the road. An RTC bus ran over the driver of the bike, Atul Loya, 16, a first year Intermediate student. The pillion rider, Govinda Jaju, escaped with injuries.
Alleging that the Rakshak vehicle belonging to the Narayanguda police station caused the accident, students of Narayana college staged a dharna outside it. High drama ensued, with students blocking the road for more than two-and-a-half hours, bringing traffic to a standstill and closing down shops.
The parents of the boys alleged that the police did not carry the victims to the hospital immediately, and waited for an autorickshaw even though the police vehicles were at hand. Gopal Jaju, father of Govinda Jaju who is now out of danger, said that both the boys were laid out on the road for more than 15 minutes, while the policemen were busy clearing the road of both vehicles involved in the accident. Nobody attended to the victims, he alleged.
Police said that the victims were shifted to the hospital as quickly as possible. “We had to move both the RTC bus and the Rakshak vehicle from the spot to avoid any attack on them by the mob,” said Narayanguda police sub inspector B. Raju Naik, who is probing the case. Upon a complaint filed by Mr Gopal Jaju, the Narayanaguda police booked cases against the staff in the Rakshak vehicle and the RTC bus driver under IPC section 304A and 337. Meanwhile, Atul’s parents donated his eyes at Osmania General Hospital.
