Rakhi waited for Olympic medal
As relatives, friends, acquaintances and fans danced to dhol beats, Reena, the sister of Olympic silver medalist Subedar Vijay Kumar, was waiting patiently for some private moments with her brother. Reason: A belated Raksha Bandhan.
Speaking to this newspaper over the phone, Reena said, “This time, I did not even know where to send the rakhi in London. My brother asked me to wait until he returns home with a medal. It was worth the wait. For me, today is Raksha Bandhan.”
Reena hopes to see her brother reach greater heights both in his sport and in the Army. She hopes to find a lovely bride for him. In reply to what gift she got from her brother this year, her mother Roshni Devi said, “Woh itna maan-samman laya hai apni behan ke liye (Vijay has brought so much honour and laurels for his sister).”
When asked what special dish she had prepared for her son, Vijay’s mother said, “Aaj kya banana tha ji! Aaj toh ghar mein party hai. Sabne wohi khaya,” was her reply.
