Public expects freebies: Governor

Governor E.S.L. Nar-simhan on Friday said social welfare schemes implemented by the government were necessary, but the public’s dependence on them should be reduced.

He also said the public’s “dil maange more tendency” was creating problems and that they should stand on their own feet with expec-ting less from the government. Government was giving a lot of “freebies”, but the public expected more, he said.

He was speaking at the academic progra-mmes’ inaugural at the Tata Institute of Social Sciences on Friday.

He felt that social welfare schemes, once imp-lemented, are impossible to withdraw. “I am not saying that there shouldn’t be welfare schemes, but they shou-ld be stopped once the objective is met,” he said.
