Protests mark counselling
The Eamcet medical counselling began on a raucous note on Friday amid protests by several student organisations.
The situation became tense at JNTU-Kukatpally, Hyderabad, one of the four online counselling centres set up across the state by NTR University of Health Sciences, when student organisations tried to obstruct the counselling process.
They were protesting against the denial of 50 additional seats each to Osmania and Kakatiya medical colleges, despite the recent orders by the AP High Court.
The student groups also demanded online admission for MBBS seats in the management quota. Acti-vists from the Left-affiliated AISF, SFI and PDSU tried to storm the counselling centre, demanding that the government check the sale of MBBS seats by private medical colleges.
In the melee, the counselling process was stopped for about half an hour before the police intervened. The police took the agitating students into custody and brought the situation under control.
Vijay Ketan Reddy, who topped Eamcet medical, took admission in MBBS at Gandhi Medical College, while fourth rank-holder Kamani Naresh Babu opted for Osmania Medical College, Hyderabad.
“In all, 424 Eamcet rankers attended the counselling session at JNTU-Kukatpally. All of them opted for MBBS,” said Dr Shankar Raman, in-charge of Eamcet's medical counselling centre at JNTU-Hyderabad. “Students ranked 1 to 900 were called for counselling on the first da,” Dr Raman stated.
Meanwhile, shouting slogans against Chief Minister N. Kiran Kumar Reddy, the student activists accused him of a “bias” against the Telangana region in denying additional seats to Osmania and Kakatiya medical colleges, even as the government had ensured additional medical seats for colleges in the Andhra region.
