People for metered tankers
Citizens are demanding mini-water tankers to solve the summer woes. Since many residents own small-sized sumps, they consider a 5,000-litre tanker large enough. They want the Water Board to introduce mini-tankers. Experts suggest that the existing mobile tankers can be used to supply 1,000 and 2,000 litres of water by fitting meters to the vehicles. An estimated 1,000 litres of water can be priced at Rs 100 or Rs 125, and most lower-middle-class families can afford this.
Currently, 5,000 litres of water (being supplied through mobile tankers,) is priced at Rs 400. “The Water Board has 10,000-litre capacity tankers. “The officials can make compartments of 1,000 litres each in big tankers and supply water to citizens. A large number of houses do not have sumps and they store water in drums,” Ashfaque Ahmed, of Jiaguda, pointed out. Already, private agencies are supplying water through sintex tanks of 500, 1,000 and 2,000 litres. They deliver water to the doorsteps of citizens. While the water supplied through Water Board tankers is potable and could be used for drinking purposes, the water being supplied by private agencies in mini-tankers is not for drinking.
“Any family can afford to dole out Rs 100 for 1,000 litres. Every house, even in the slums, has a drum or two in which to store water,” said K. Aravind, a social worker. Water Board managing director Adhar Sinha said the primary duty of the Board was to supply water through pipelines. He stated: “Because there are areas which are not covered by pipeline network, we are supplying water through mobile tankers. Once the Krishna and Godavari projects are commissioned, there will be no demand for tanker water. But we will examine the demand of citizens to fix tankers with meters,” he said.
