Overhead cables to go underground soon
Overhead cables that pose a threat to the lives of motorists and are also destroying the beauty of the city will soon be a thing of the past. The Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation (GHMC) has struck a deal with cable TV operators, Internet Service Providers and telecom companies to lay underground common ducts on 170-km length of main roads in the city.
Mayor Majid Hussain and the GHMC commissioner, M.T. Krishna Babu said at a media conference that work on laying common ducts started on Wednesday, marking the process of beautifying the city. As a pilot project, four main roads with a length of 15-km have been given to the consortium of cable and telecom operators to lay ducts.
“The priority is to remove overhead cables and place them in underground ducts on 125-km of roads connected with the international conference on bio-diversity known as COP-11,” they said. The ducting is being done along the lines of a similar project executed in Chennai. Though the total length of main roads identified for laying of ducts is 170-km, the target is to complete ducting on priority on 125-km length of roads connected with COP-11.
