Olympic gift for Sania’s mom
Nasima Mirza, mother of tennis ace Sania Mirza, will accompany the two-member Indian women’s tennis team at the London Olympics as manager, the All India Tennis Association announced.
The decision raised eyebrows but AITA explained that Nasima has been travelling with the Indian wo-men’s team since 2001 — for the Fed Cup, Asian Games, Commonwealth Games and the Olympics. The decision was taken on July 1 but announced on Tuesday.
“With her vast experience (she has extensively toured with Sania on the WTA circuit as well) and India having two lady members on the Olympic team, she was considered the best person to be nominated to look after the Indian women’s team consisting of Sania and Rushmi (Chakravarthy),” the AITA statement said.
