No order on Bayyaram mines
The AP High Court has refused to grant an interim order allowing the Rakshana Steels Ltd to explore iron ore at Bayyaram area in Khammam district. The company is allegedly owned Anil Kumar, son -in-law of late Chief Minister Y.S. Rajasekhar Reddy. Justice G. Chandraiah was dealing with a plea by the company challenging the decision of the state government in withdrawing an order passed earlier by reserving the Bayyaram area for exploration of the ore by Andhra Pradesh Mining Development Corpora-tion (APMDC). The APMDC later on entered into an MoU with Rakshana Steels for mineral extraction.
As there was protest from the tribals of the area, the state issued an order withdrawing the earlier GO which had reserved the area to APMDC. Then the company moved the High Court. While refusing to grant interim direction, the judge posted the case for final hearing to August.
Stay on Judges appointments
A division bench comprising Justice G. Rohini and Justice Ashutosh Mohunta has stayed the appointment for 13 posts of district judges in the state. The High Court initiated process on August 19, 2010 to fill up 17 district judge posts.
After the results in the written test were declared, the rule insisting on the minimum marks for being considered for selection was repealed. Some aspirants challenged the recruitment process. They also contended that the rule was not published in a gazette so as to bring it into force, and persons who were employees like the assistant public prosecutor could not have been considered for the appointment. They cited that one candidate did not have the minimum standing of seven years at the bar was also considered for the post.
After hearing the arguments for over seven days, the bench found that the change in rules did not affect the chances of Purushottam Rao, Sujana, Madhusudhan Rao, and Srinivas and ruled that they can be appointed as district judges. While staying the remaining 13 posts, the bench reserved its orders on the plea.
