Nine cops depose against SIMI acts
Nine police officers submitted their affidavits against the Students Islamic Movement of India (SIMI) as the tribunal hearing evidence against the banned organisation had its first sitting in the city on Saturday.
Delhi High Court Judge V.K. Shali presided over the sitting at Ranga Reddy district collectorate in Lakadikapul.
Advocate Ashok Agarwal later cross-examined the witnesses on behalf of SIMI.
The police officers who submitted their affidavits are DSP M. Nageshwar Rao, additional SP B.N.V. Satyanarayana, ACP K.R. Nagaraju, additional SP K. Babu Rao, IG (special intelligence branch) Sajjanar, and inspectors C.G. Ragavendra, G. Girish Rao, B. Bhaskar and K. Venkateshwar Rao.
These officers are investigating cases such as the one against fringe group leader Vikaruddin and organisations like Darsgah-e-Jehad O Shahadat (DJS), allegedly with links to SIMI.
Cross-questioning the officers, advocate Agarwal contended that SIMI was maliciously implicated in the cases.
While the tribunal was supposed to be open to the public, even the media was not allowed inside the hall initially. When this correspondent went in, some advocates raised objection with the judge. But the media was later allowed, with a request to report fairly on the proceedings. This, after the judge had a brief discussion with the others while urging mediapersons to sit outside for a while.
SIMI was declared an unlawful group on February 3 this year under Section 3 of Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act, 1963. The government claims the organisation continued to function in a clandestine fashion.
