Naidu plans hit Mala roadblock
The issue of categorisation of Scheduled Castes into ABCD groups has created a fissure in Telugu Desam, with Mala leaders opposing the idea during a closed-door meeting with party president N. Chandrababu Naidu on Friday, it is learnt.
According to sources, TD leaders from the community warned Mr Naidu that it would be counter-productive for the party, as it will first not stand in the court of law, besides alienating 29 per cent Mala voters.
An upset Mr Naidu reportedly shot back that he would not mind losing some party activists and leaders on the issue.
The TD chief held discussions with Mala community leaders like Pushpa Raj, Shinde, Gollapudi Surya Rao and Devaiah, among others, to get their opinion on the issue.
Opposing the idea, a majority of them is learnt to have suggested Mr Naidu to leave the issue for the Centre to take a decision.
Keen on categorisation of SCs, apparently to appease the majority Madiga community on the lines of BC declaration ahead of the 2014 elections, Mr Naidu had held discussions with Madiga leaders on Thursday.
Supporting categorisation of SCs, prominent party leaders from the community had said in the meeting that it had been implemented by the party when in power and would benefit it even now.
But taking a contrarian view in Friday's meeting, Mr Pushparaj is learnt to have remarked that categorisation of SCs would be “cheating” the people since it would not stand in a court of law.
