Naidu backs SC categorisation
In an attempt to set its house in order and woo different communities before the 2014 elections, the Telugu Desam on Saturday decided to back categorisation of Scheduled Castes into ABCD groups. Party sources said the Telangana issue is next on agenda, and TD chief N. Chandrababu Naidu is likely to resend the 2008 letter to the Centre, extending su-pport to a T-state, or issue another statement to give “clarity” on the issue and throw the ball in the Cen-tre’s court for a decision.
Mr Naidu reportedly told the politburo members that the party is committed to the 2008 resolution and a statement in this regard will be issued in the first week of next month. The decision on SC categorisation comes close on the heels of the party's promise to reserve 100 seats in the next Assembly elections for candidates from Backward Classes. The politburo meeting, chaired by Mr Naidu, asked the Centre to bring in necessary constitutional amendments in the ongoing Parliament session to effect categorisation for SCs. Mr Naidu said he would also write a letter to Prime Minister Manmohan Singh, requesting him to undertake categorisation of SCs into ABCD groups to ensure social justice.
“The TD is committed to social justice for all castes among the Scheduled Castes, based on their population,” he said. “The TD government had (earlier) undertaken categorisation but it was struck down by the SC which said it could be done only through an Act of Parliament. We expected the Centre to act but it failed to do so.”
