MIM questions ‘protest’ deal
The ruling Congress and the Telugu Desam on Monday reached out to an understanding to end the impasse in the Assembly over the Supreme Court notices to six ministers and eight IAS officers.
As per the informal agreement, the TD has been allowed to register its protest against the denial of an opportunity to discuss the issue but the real intent is to expose the amassing of wealth by Kadapa MP Y.S. Jagan Mohan Reddy misusing his father’s position within the time permitted by the Speaker.
The MIM, however, played spoilsport by questioning the unusual practice of the political parties registering protest on an issue that was not debated in the House at all. MIM Floor leader Akbaruddin Owaisi accu-sed both the Congress and the TD of resorting to “match fixing” to run the House as per their convenience. He also alleged that the two parties forced a stalemate because their respective leaders had to go for campaigning for the byelections.
“Now you want the House to run because you are finished with your priority, the by polls,” he said. The MIM members trooped into Well and stalled the proceedings, insisting for a full fledged debate on corruption. There was din in the House with the TD members shouting at Mr Owaisi for coming to the rescue of Mr Jagan Mohan Reddy.
Denying the charges, Mr Owaisi put the TD into trouble by questioning TD chief N Chandrababu Naidu on why he compromised on the sensational issue of SC notices to ministers on which his party had earlier stalled the proceedings for about a week. “Why do you (Mr Naidu) want to protest for a few minutes, let us have full length debate,” he asked.
The Congress Floor managers agreeing to the TD's proposal of registering a protest also did not go down well with the ministers who received the SC notices. They complained that Mr Naidu would indulge in mudslinging but they can not react as declaring the GOs as legally valid might weaken the CBI case against Mr Jagan Mohan Reddy. Earlier, Mr Chandrababu Naidu alleged that the state interests were compromised while issuing the 26 GOs to help private individuals or organisations. Nimmagadda Prasad benefited with thousands of acres forcibly taken away from the farmers. Returning the favour, Mr Prasad invested `800 crore in Mr Jagan Mohan Reddy’s companies, Mr Naidu said.
