Medicos protest, boycott duties
A call for a State-wide agitation by junior doctors, to stay away from emergency services, is likely to take place in the next few days.
Osmania Medical College and Hospital medicos had already boycotted emergency duties on Monday along with OPD, regular duties and classes, which they have not been attending for almost a week.
The medicos are protesting agai-nst the state for non-implementation of the clauses of bi-partisan agreement with them such as security, guidelines for rural services, improvement of infrastructure in hospitals etc.
With around 1,000 doctors shunning duties, alternate arrangements made are inadequate and patients coming from far off areas are hugely inconvenienced.
Dr Rafi, resident medical officer of OGH, said, “We have six service post graduates and transfer internees to help in the casualty department round the clock. Four other service PGs are also attending to duties.”
One of the service PGs, however, said that alternate arrangements can cater to about 50 per cent of the cases and the absence of junior doctors is definitely being felt.
Chandrakala Rao, wife of a patient who has been admitted at OGH, said, “Today, no doctor came for check-ups. In the morning, a senior doctor had come for rounds and since then only nurses are looking after the patients.
” Hundreds of out-patients, coming from far-flung areas, had to go back as hardly any doctor was present in the OPD.
Dr B. Vamsi, president of OMC junior doctors’ association and Dr K. Aditya, said, that the authorities were given 72 hours prior notice but the government has not implemented any of the clauses of the bi-partisan agreement.
“Despite High Court orders that ESMA can’t be imposed on junior doctors, it hasn’t been removed. SPF was not deployed in Gandhi Hospital or OGH, no clear guidelines have been issued about rural service and certificates of many candidates have been withheld.
Repeated appeals to the government, including the Chief Minister have not yielded any result and so all medical colleges in the State are going to boycott emergency duties in a day or two,” said Dr Aditya, a PG doctor.
