Kiran gives his side of the story
Chief Minister N. Kiran Kumar Reddy on Friday met Congress president Sonia Gandhi and explained to her the reasons for the defeat of the party in the recently held bypolls for 18 seats in the state at the hands of the YSR Congress.
In his first visit to the national capital since the bypoll debacle, the former cricketer was closeted with Mrs Gandhi for nearly 40 minutes.
Though no official word was available on what exactly transpired at the meeting, sources indicated that Mr Kiran Kumar Reddy submitted a set of proposals to revive the Congress and also bring about greater synergy between the government and the party in the state.
He reportedly advocated highlighting the schemes drawn and implemented by his government, which were way above what YSR had done during his days.
Mr Kiran Kumar Reddy also submitted that the sympathy factor had worked in favour of YSR Congress’ victory in the bypolls.
Out of the 18 seats, the Congress was able to secure only two seats while, YSR Congress won 15 seats and one went to the Telangana Rashtra Samiti.
The Telugu Desam, led by former Chief Minister N. Chandrababu Naidu, drew a blank.
The Lok Sabha seat of Nellore was also clinched by the YSR Congress.
During his visit, Mr Kiran Kumar Reddy also called on Union finance minister Pranab Mukherjee, defence minister A.K. Antony, Union home minister P. Chidambaram and Union health minister and Congress general secretary in-charge of AP Ghulam Nabi Azad.
He also signed the nomination papers for Mr Mukherjee to contest the Presidential elections in Mr Pawan Kumar Bansal’s chamber.
