Key to diabetes cure lies in brain
The brain holds a substantial connect with the formation of diabetes, and if the factors are zeroed in, and effective solutions tailored to prevent it, we may well conquer one of the major diseases that afflict a great number of Indians. City-based biotechnology firm, Bioaxis DNA research centre Pvt. Ltd. is conducting research on this brain connection. Dr Amit Kumar, CEO and chief scientific officer of the firm said, “Soon, we could harness that one protein, and by means of injecting it into the body, the condition of diabetes can be tamed.”
“There have been concerted efforts worldwide to find a non-insulin solution for diabetes. More than 90 per cent of all Indians with diabetes have type-2 diabetes, the non-insulin dependent form. “This also causes obesity, which in turn results in insulin resistance, a vicious cycle. These people with the obesity gene, tend to overeat, typically, high-calorie intake of sugary and fatty substances,” said Dr Kumar.
Diabetes is defined as the condition of hypoglycemia resulting from defects in insulin secretion. “If you look closely, diabetes, obesity and neurological problems are therefore, interconnected. A recent research had stated that a substance called Butyryl cholinesterase (Bche) plays a big role to play in diabetes, obesity and in turn, neurological disorders. All diabetics have low brain derivative neuropathic factors such as Bche that is inversely proportional to the sugar levels. Our lab studies have found that in Indians with diabetes, these factors are very low. We are also working towards harnessing this Bche,” he said.
