Kaleswari drivers lose licences in clampdown
RTA officials will be suspending the driving licence of the two drivers who were driving the ill-fated Sree Kaleswari Travels bus that met with an accident on Sholapur road, resulting in 29 deaths and injuries to 17 passengers.
While the bus has Karnataka registration, both drivers, who were also injured in the accident, are from Andhra Pradesh. Their driving licences will be suspended for a minimum period of six months. The transport department is currently awaiting a report from Osmanabad police station in Maharashtra, as the accident site in Sholapur falls under that police station’s limits. “A case has been booked by the Osmanabad SP where the accident took place. We are currently awaiting the police investigation report. As soon as the report comes, we will first suspend the driving licences of both drivers who were driving the bus at the time of the accident,” said joint transport commissioner G. Panduranga Rao. The drivers have licences valid up to 2015.
However, since the bus of the Sree Kaleswari Travels is registered in Bengaluru, a decision on whether the bus will be taken by the Karnataka government has to be taken. “As per the preliminary understanding the drivers lost control of the vehicles due to the blinding lights of an oncoming vehicle. The final decision on suspension of licences will take longer. Decision on any other punishment to be meted out to the drivers would be taken only after the investigation report from the police,” added the RTA officials.
