With the country’s presidential elections not far away, Twitter was full of messages calling for the former president to return to the helm, particularly in light of the spectacular success of the Agni V missile tests last week. Writer Srinivas Bhogle tweeted, “I still remember the thunderous standing ovation when A.P.J. Abdul Kalam entered my lab in 1989 to deliver his lecture on the Agni Mission.”

The man who had famously said, “We have built the Agni to deliver all forms of warheads, including flowers,” always struck a chord with the youth of India. Photographer Atul Kasb-ekar tweeted: “Are there enough people like me that want Dr Kalam back as our President? Is it constitutionally possible?”

Zalak Trivedi, a research analyst from Ahmedabad, said, “After this entire campaign against corruption, Dr Kalam has been among the few who have emerged clean. People will feel at ease if he is sitting at the helm.” Siddhartha Sen, public relations professional from Delhi said, “I want Dr Kalam as the next president for his impeccable integrity, moral fortitude and focus on nation building. He will be a perfect choice at a time when graft and policy paralysis have become the bane of national interest.”

Nandlal Sharma, a writer from Jaipur, said, “Dr Kalam must be made President again because his thoughts and dreams are young and relevant even today”. Sushant Datta, a student from city , said, “He was much more than a rubber stamp of the government.”

I want to begin with a little story that was told to me by a leading executive at Aptech. He was exercising in a gym with a lot of younger people.

Shekhar Kapur’s Bandit Queen didn’t make the cut. Neither did Shaji Karun’s Piravi, which bagged 31 international awards.
