Ill-fated S11 coach was a ‘defective’ piece of work
The charred S11 coach of Tamil Nadu Express was a disaster waiting to happen. Coach no. CN08201, manufactured in 2008, was given a sick marking or rather reported defective with electrical problems months ago.
The coach underwent periodical overhauling (PoH) at Basin Bridge Coach Maintenance Depot (BBQ) only on February 8, 2012. Later this May, it was again brought to BBQ for sick lane attention, particularly with complaints of a dysfunctional alternator that powers the coach. The fault was rectified and the coach was certified fit for running for 14 days, which was followed by trip maintenance, railway sources revealed to Deccan Chronicle.
Since February, the coach ran 5,000 km per trip after primary maintenance at BBQ ahead of every trip, including one at BBQ last Thursday and no electrical fault or failure was reported till now, except the complaint in May, sources recalled, adding that coaches were utilised up to 20 years and this four-year-old coach was relatively new to develop a faulty circuit.
Another crucial area where the railway department faulted was deploying an electrical mechanic on board long distance trains to attend electrical faults. Tamil Nadu Express, which started from here on Thursday, did not have electricians on board.
