IITian arrested for harassing girl
An IIT-Delhi student was arrested by the state CID cyber crime sleuths for harassing a girl by uploading obscene content and sending her vulgar emails. According to additional DG (CID) S.V. Ramana Murthy, the student, Surender, a resident of Mahbubabad, was accused of transmitting obscene and offensive information in electronic form and causing criminal intimidation.
The girl is also a student of IIT-Delhi. Cyber Crime SP U. Ramamohan registered a case after the victim’s father lodged a complaint regarding harassment of his daughter and other family members and identified the accused through Internet Protocol addresses and mobile phone data. Surender told the police that he had befriended her upon the girl under the pretext of guiding her, then when she refused to marry him, he took recourse to such harassment by creating a fake profile in the name of the victim’s sister. He was also sending her threatening text messages and mails. There are three other similar cases registered against him in Kanpur and Mahbubabad. His mobile was seized and he has been remanded to 14 days’ judicial custody.
