IIIT admissions turn tough after SSC grades
With grades replacing marks in SSC examinations this year, the government is mulling over different criteria, including a draw of lots, as alternative selection procedures for admission to the IIITs for the 2012-13 session. Between them, the IIITs at Basar, Nuzividu and Idupulapaya have 3,000 seats available.
While SSC marks have been the basis of admissions to these institutions till date, total marks were replaced this year by Grade Point Average, or GPA, amounting to a total of 10 points. And therein lies the problem, said officials, as thousands of students have secured the same grades. According to data provided by the SSC Board, 1,093 students secured 10 out of 10 GPA points, another 8,382 students got 9.8 GPA, 17,000 got 9.7 GPA, 6 secured 9.6 GPA and 23,273 got 9.5 GPA.
To break the tie, officials are considering giving first preference to grades secured in Maths, followed by Science, English, Social Studies and First Language subjects. If that also fails, admissions would be made according to students’ age, with those born earlier getting the first look-in, it is proposed. Officials said a “draw of lots” would be held as a last resort.
The government is set to announce the new selection system after the deadline to submit IIIT applications ends on July 4. Prof. R.V. Raja Kumar, vice-chancellor, Rajiv Gandhi University of Knowledge Technologies, which runs IIITs, said, “Applications will be accepted from June 11 to 30.” He said students are required to take a print of the application form from the website and send the filled-in form, along with necessary certificates, to RGUKT by July 4.
