Goods worth Rs 5cr gutted in godown
A major fire broke out in an electronic goods godown at Venkateshwara Colony, Uppal, and property worth more than Rs 5 crore was gutted in the early hours of Thursday. The godown, which was spread across almost one acre, was completely gutted in the fire. However, no casualty was reported. The fire control room in the city received a fire call alerting them of a fire in the godown of Santosh Electronics India Private Limited at about 4.30 am and a fire tender from Moula Ali Fire Station was immediately rushed to the spot followed later by five more fire tenders. It took more than five hours for the fire personnel to bring the fire under control.
The district fire officer, Mr Khaja Kareemuddin, said that the godown was a rice mill earlier and was later shut down a few years ago due to protests from the residents in the locality. However, a few years ago some other parties started using the building as an electronic goods storage unit. The godown was located amid residential buildings, which is illegal, and the huge godown did not even comply with the minimum fire safety regulation measures. “The exact cause of the fire is yet to be ascertained,” he said.
